Pregnancy Policy at Our School
Hi Everyone!
Currently in our Theory of Knowledge class, we have been discussing the ongoing issue of a pregnancy policy for our school. So far, no policy has been put in place (the school hasn't faced this issue yet, you see) so we thought it'd be interesting if we had a mini-debate to see what kind of policy we would come up with! I took up the role of the pregnant student (for no reasons at all, I promise) and formulated my own idea of what I thought the policy should be and why. I thought about it for a while, then came up with the following opinion:
In the view of the pregnant student that attends the Baton Rouge International School, I would argue that a student bearing a child should not have an effect on their treatment at the school. This international school teaches students to embrace all beliefs and opinions of different societies and cultures around the world. For this reason, the expulsion/suspension of a pregnant student would undermine the very foundation of the school. Alternatively, this situation would help students develop an open-minded outlook on societal challenges and help them develop perspectives of their own that they may find useful in the future. This situation could offer opportunities for each student to learn certain life lessons, like the consequences of poor decisions and planning. At a more personal standpoint, I would argue that the pregnancy was the result of the student’s decision and they should be able to decide what to do with their body without the influence of other people. After all, most of their pregnancy would not affect their studies. The unborn child does not talk nor move, and therefore poses no threat to the well-being of themselves and their peers. Also, pregnant teachers and staff members receive no special treatment in terms of work hours (until the baby is born), nor do they get fired because of their pregnancy. On this basis, how is it fair for the pregnant student to be asked to leave? Concerning the viewpoint of the public and other members of the school, it would be hypocritical for the school to disallow the pregnant student to continue their studies. It would be an act of discrimination and segregation in an otherwise accepting and equal school system. This act of expulsion/suspension would label the school in such a way that may drive away any potential customers.
Therefore, I believe that the school policy regarding this issue should be that pregnancy among students is permitted. The student would be allowed to continue their studies under the following conditions: the pregnancy shall not interfere with any school work (including homework and tests), it cannot be discussed on school premises amongst students, and doctors’ appointments regarding the unborn child must be schedules after school.
Do you guys agree or disagree with this opinion? If so, why?
