Returning to School After Being Sick

Hi Everyone!

This past week has been hectic for me: I got sick, returned to school a little discombobulated, and rushed to get everything that I missed. I'm pretty sure that just about everyone has experienced something similar to this and can agree that recovering is just about the hardest thing to do. But don't fret, I have a 5 tips on how to make this recovery go as smoothly as possible.

Email Teachers
Either you or your parents should email your teachers telling them why you're not at school, asking for the assignments you missed, and/or the notes you missed.  But don't forget about your friends because they help you out too. Ask them too for notes and/or assignments you missed. They can be the difference between sanity and an anxiety attack.

Ask for Extensions
This one can be tricky, but asking teachers for extensions can mean the world to someone who's recovering from a cold, even if it's just one day. That one extra day you have to complete an assignment can take so much pressure off trying to make up all of that missed work.

Pick your Days
Picking your sick days carefully is perhaps the most tricky of all of the tips, but can change everything. I was fortunate to have gotten sick at the end of the trimester, when all of the grades for the first trimester reset, but that was merely pure luck; and I wasn't at school for the last two days that our BRIS teachers had to input grades. Again, this was merely pure luck, but not attending school for the last two days of the trimester was a huge factor in my smooth recovery.

Just Keep Working (if you're not too sick)
Although this tip isn't always plausible, I suggest you do the simple and easy homework when you're sick, but don't push yourself too much. The moment when being sick becomes boring (but you're still sick) is a surefire way of knowing that your mind is ready to work but your immune system is still hard at work. This is when you know you can start working on homework again. I cannot tell you how many times this tip helped me.

Do More Than What's Asked
Last, but not least, if you're falling behind in a certain class, do a little more homework than what is asked for another class. I know this doesn't exactly make sense but doing this can give you more time to work on the assignments for the first class. Even though it sounds really confusing, this is one of the two tips that you can use even when you're not sick and, on top of that, I use it occasionally. I really helps me when I have huge assignments in one class and can spend 20 extra minutes working on homework for a less stressful class. Alright, to clear up any issues with this tip, I wrote a little story to hopefully simplify this tip. So, let's say that Bob is taking HL Physics and SL History Route One and is behind in his HL class and is a little ahead in his SL one. Not to mention, Bob has his History class twice before he has his HL class. So what Bob would do is do more history homework than what is asked and work on his physics homework during the new free time he has acquired. I hope that this little story has helped.

So, when you have a bad case of the sniffles, have a serious cough, and don't think you can really go to school, don't forget to get plenty of rest and, hopefully, use some of these tips!
